Omaha Hi Low: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha hi/low begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants often get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at the start, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha High-Low provides an overwhelming assortment of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high, along with several battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
