Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed participating in different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he would play many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus more on the game.
The definite advancement in his skills began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge each other. Howard had access into several of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
