Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked gambling on various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and moved to New York to participate in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were rough as he played countless hours and lose most times. He made some additional cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.

The real improvement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would often play against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the best female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard moved to Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
